monster hunter “Think this is gonna work?” Rex unsubtly tossed his head in the direction of the patient.

Alekos raised an eyebrow. “I should be asking you that question.”

“I'm just asking for a little faith!” A pause. “Was kinda hoping for a 'Of course it will, Rex.' or 'You got this!'”

Alekos walked away.

As the door firmly locked behind Alekos, and the gate in front slid open, Rex – now alone and slightly deflated – sized up the challenge before him.

The patient in question was a raging, furious wildcat who stood ten feet tall to the shoulder, and of course, mustn't forget the ear-splitting shrieking and violent, demonic powers. And Rex, unfortunately, was no healer nor tamer but he was the only one thickheaded enough to volunteer to cure the critter's curse.

Fortunately, Rex was armed and armoured to the teeth with scale sitting above chainmail. Unfortunately, he'd already seen three people in similar armour get torn to shreds by the beast. And they'd had the advantage of running away from it while Rex has to very unavoidably run towards it.

He sighed and rolled his shoulders one more time. Maybe a bit of muscle warm-up and limbering could be the difference between (his) life or death.

He took a breath.

“Rexy-boy, they'll call you a lion tamer.” He reassured himself with a chuckle. And hesitated. “Or just really really stupid?”

Then, his face stretched into a grin. “Well, either way, they'll be talking about me. So guess that's all that matters.”

And he ran into the arena.
